After a slight mix up with the delivery, I recieved my U581 as promised.
The unit worked great except for certain GM codes that were not available. The code was there, but the explanation of it was not available.
I thought it might be that I did not make sure to ""Update" the unit (sometimes the item arrives and there are new updates already that need to be installed).
So I read the skimpy manual that came with it, hooked up the antiquated Serial Cable to my computer (they need to include a USB Cable and Software Drivers), went on the website and tried to download the update...it Didn't work.
I have tried the unit on about 6 cars in the past week and the only one that I had trouble with was a 96 Buick. It even worked good when used on a 2001 Volkswagen.

I bought the MemoScan U581 about a year ago, and it's really gotten a lot more use than I thought it would. We have two Hondas - an 01 Civic and an 02 Accord, and since the warranties are up, I thought having a code reader might come in handy for troubleshooting purposes. I did some research, and I found this unit seemed to have a good balance of features and affordability. It gives full-text summaries of errors (not just the codes); it can also do live data captures, and its software can be updated via the manufacturer's website. I loan this out quite a bit to friends, and it's always worked with their varied vehicles. The manual could be a little better written, but it's decipherable. Overall, in my opinion, the U581 is a sophisticated diagnostic tool at a reasonable price.

I bought my scanner in Oct. 21, 2008. It came very quickly by the seller. And when using it at first, I had mixed results. Some times it would work fine and other times it would shut down after trying to connect to the Auto Link. Later I found out that you must press the enter button and release quickly, other wise it would think you wanted it to shut down, which it did. If you go pass the 30 day grace period, don't expect any support from the seller or the manufacture. They will not return your E-Mails. The unit performed as advertised and the up dating of software is probably a little more complicated than the average computer person can handle, but it can be accomplished.
